Create and Publish Oriented Imagery Datasets and Layers

*You will need to have installed ArcGIS Pro 3.2

Follow the normal procedure to create a new project in ArcGIS Pro

image-20240214-193836.png

For the example we will use on this document, we will name the project “Test_OI_Dataset”

  • Go to the View -> Geoprocessing

    image-20240214-194145.png
  • Type Create Oriented Imagery Dataset

  • A new window will open

  • Fill out the required fields and click Run

  • You will see that a new layer has been added to the Contents Panel with the name of the OI Dataset

  • Go to View -> Geoprocessing and type “Add Images to Oriented Imagery Dataset”

  • Select the recently created Oriented Imagery Dataset

  • Select the Imagery Category that fits the type of images that will be added to the OI Dataset

The imagery category serves to define the type of images added to a dataset and establish the default properties related to oriented imagery. These properties can be modified later using the Update Oriented Imagery Dataset Properties tool. For a description of the Imagery Categories available for the OI Dataset click here

  • Click on the folder icon next to the Input Data field

  • A new window will open. We will select a Text file (image_list.txt) containing the paths to JPEG images stored in a server. This will allow later on sharing in AGOL the OI Layer generated from the OI Dataset. Click Ok.

The Input Data field is required to provide the path and name of the images that will be added to the OI Dataset. Currently, the following options are supported:

    • One or more images in JPEG format.

    • A folder containing only JPEG images.

    • A Text file (.txt) containing the paths to JPEG images, each on a separate line.

    • A CSV file (.csv) adhering to an oriented imagery table schema. Click here for a description of the Oriented imagery table.

    • A feature layer compatible with an oriented imagery attribute table schema.

    • An Oriented imagery layer.

  • Click on Run

  • Right-click on the OI layer (Dron_Images_test in this example) and select Zoom to Layer

  • Click on the Oriented Imagery Layer tab

  • Click on Explore Images and the Oriented Imagery Viewer panel will be added to the right

  • Click on the green markers on the Map representing the location where each Image was taken. The image available in that location will be displayed in the Oriented Imagery Viewer. Also, a red polygon will be displayed on the map representing the Current Footprint of the image and informing its orientation.

  • Click on Footprints to display the footprint of all the images available in the OI Dataset

  • Click on the Map-In image location Tool

  • Click anywhere in the Image displayed in the Oriented Imagery viewer to identify the same location in map space (with a red diamond on the map) and in image space (with a red diamond on the image).

  • Click on the Navigation Tool to explore the images that contain the selected location on the map using a compass

  • Right-click on the OI layer (Dron_Images_test in this example) and select the Attribute table.

  • The Attribute Table for the OI Layer is displayed showing detailed parameters for each image

  • Right-click on the OI layer (Dron_Images_test in this example) and select the Share As Web layer.

  • A new window will open, click on Analyze

  • If error 00374 Unique Numeric IDs are not assigned appears, click on the three dots on the right

  • A second window will pop up and click on Auto-Assign IDs Sequentially

  • Click on Publish

  • Once the publishing process is complete, go to AGOL → My Content. The Feature Layer (Oriented Imagery layer) and Service Definition will be visible in the content list.

  • Click on the Feature Layer (Drone_Images_Test in this example), and a new page will become visible

  • Click on Open in Map Viewer

  • The Map Viewer now is available showing green markers in the location of the Oriented Images

  • Click on the Oriented Imagery icon on the right to open the Oriented Imagery Viewer

  • And then click on any of the green circular markers to display an image in the Oriented Imagery Viewer

  • Click on the Additional Footprints icon in the Oriented Imagery Viewer to display the footprint of all the images available in the OI Feature layer

  • Click on the Map-In image location Tool to identify the same location in map space (with a red diamond on the map) and in image space (with a red diamond on the image).

  • Click on the Navigation Tool to explore the images that contain the selected location on the map using a compass
